Teaching Associates & Graduate Assistants

Cal Poly has launched a program, funded by your student success fees, that awards appointments for Teaching Associate or Graduate Assistant positions.

Teaching Associates (TA)

A teaching position assigned to a specific class for a specific quarter, hired by your college, funded by Graduate Education.

Program Goals
  • Enable top quality students to join Cal Poly by providing necessary financial support.
  • Enable graduate students to develop teaching skills and encourage them to enter the teaching profession at institutions of higher education.
  • Provide an experience that deepens the student’s mastery of his/her field of study through the learn-by-doing experience.
Criteria
  • You must have filed a Working Formal Study Plan with the Graduate Education office. For incoming applicants who are awarded positions, a Working Formal Study Plan must be filed by the end of their first quarter of enrollment.
  • You must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student (8 units) for each quarter you receive funds.
  • Students receiving funds must maintain a Cal Poly GPA of 3.0 or greater for all quarters they receive funds.
  • BMS (Blended Master’s) students are not eligible until they reach 180 degree applicable units and complete their PBCO (Post Baccalaureate Change of Objective) form, thereby transitioning to graduate status.
Positional Parameters
  • Appointments are limited to a maximum of three quarters in any one academic year
  • Appointments are paid according to the WTUs assigned to the class. Check with your Graduate Coordinator and Department Chair for details.
  • A Teaching Associate is the instructor of record.
  • Certificate and Credential Programs are not eligible.
  • Students in self-support programs are not eligible.

Graduate Assistants (GA)

A salaried research position in your program, hired and funded by Graduate Education.

Program Goals
  • Enable highly qualified students to join and remain at Cal Poly by providing financial support.
  • Support teacher-scholar model by enabling students to do creative works that are either published or presented at an appropriate conference.
  • Provide an experience that deepens the student’s mastery of his/her field of study through the learn-by-doing experience.
Criteria
  • Indicate in your application how this will expedite the completion of your research project/creative work. Also indicate if any outside collaboration will be supported by the funds. Identify if the results will be published or presented at a conference.
  • You must have filed a Working Formal Study Plan with the Graduate Education office prior to application deadline. For incoming applicants who are awarded positions, a Working Formal Study Plan must be filed by the end of their first quarter of enrollment.
  • You must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student (8 units) for each quarter you receive funds.

  • Yearly appointments are for a monthly stipend position in your program, hired by Graduate Education, corresponding to 8 research hours a week.

  • Students in sefl-support programs are not eligible.
